LET'S BEGIN WITH THIS ; My latest book release - "Drums of Champion Hill," which is the subject of this particular blog post, HAS BEEN PUBLISHED! Simply go to Amazon and search by title - OR - Try this link. Now, then. Let's get back to the blog post!
c Y’see, back in 1987, I started work - which is to say, I began to research, and it turned out to be one heckuva LOT of research - WEEKS of it - for an historical fiction novel, to be based upon the 1863 Civil War Battle of Champion Hill.
I had originally entitled the work - “Drums of Doom,” based upon a quote by noted British historian, J.F.C. Fuller, who’d stated in his book - The Generalship of Ulysses S. Grant, that,“The Drums of Champion Hill sounded the doom of Richmond,” and so, from that quote, I took my first book title - Drums of Doom: The Battle of Champion Hil.
When I’d finished with all that research, I organized my files, created an outline, and then, at long last, I began to write. In time, I completed 16 chapters . But, then, something happened. We’ll just say that life found a way - some several ways, actually - to intrude, and so, I elected to set the book aside, intending to get back to it ASAP.
But, as it turned out, It was fully 38 years later when I did get back to it. Fortunately, I still had all my research notes, as well as my outlines for each chapter, and after thoroughly studying all that material, and re-reading those first 16 chapters I'd written so long ago, re-reading them several times, in fact, I sat myself down and I began to write again. And. as it turned out, finally, nearly 40 years after I’d begun to research the book, it was finished.
I'd self-published the first version of the book, at that time, on Amazon’s Kindle Direct Publishing service. Not too long after the first edition of the book went live, I decided to run a search on Amazon, on my book’s title, just out of pure curiousity - and the results of that search really disturbed me.
When I searched my book did show up, but it came in several listings down the page, below several other novels, all of them sporting the same name as my book - Drums of Doom - except that every one of these other books were total fiction, most of them fantasy books, dragon-slaying, like that, and several of the others of these books were set in the medieval era - knights in armor, and so on. NONE of those other books had anything whatsoever to do with the American Civil War. And then, a fellow contacted me, through a lawyer, claiming he'd copyrighted the title, 'Drums of Doom." So I seemed clear that I needed to rename the book. By doing so, I would eliminate a copyright battle with one of the authors who'd penned one of those other books. Add to that the harsh fact that I most certainly did NOT want my work associated with those olther, um, missives,
Since I’d have to pull my original version from Amazon's servers in order to rename it, I’d decided to re-arrange some of the elements of the book, as well, so as to make it easier to navigate (I hope!) . But first, I chose a new book title that went right to the point - Drums of Champion Hill , again, mostly in order to separate my work from those other offerings - including thzat one with the copyrighted title..
Ove the past coupla weeks, I underwent the process of restructuring some of the elements of the book, It was a lengthy process, creating a new manuscript that the book snoids at Amazon would approve. It took better than 20 tries, But, Amazon's gatekeeper finally accepted the new edition of "Drums of Champion Hill."h This; new edition of the book has now gone ive on Kindle, and , not long after Amazon accepted my book, I undated the "Order" links on my shop's website.
